5 Tips for Beating a Speeding Ticket

traffic ticket

It happens to the best of us. We are driving and suddenly a police officer is pulling us over. I want you to have these tips for beating a ticket BEFORE you need them. Here are 5 tips that can help you get out of a speeding ticket.

Tip 1 – Make sure you behave calm and predictably.

You want to make sure that the police officer pulling you over feels at ease and not threatened in any way.

  • Pull over to a safe spot and turn off your engine.
  • Roll down your window all the way
  • Keep both of your hands on the steering wheel while the officer approaches the car and while you are speaking.
  • Do not get out of the car unless the officer asks you to.
  • Let the officer know if you have to get anything from your glove compartment or pocket before you reach. “Is it ok if I get my insurance card from the glove compartment”, is a great way keep the situation at ease.
  • Do not make any quick jerky movements during the stop.
  • An officer that is calm and at peace is more likely to work with you than one who is uncomfortable.

Tip 2 – Make sure you speak calmly and with due respect for the police officer.

Even if you feel that you are being pulled over for no reason the time of the traffic stop is not the best to argue that point. Take precaution to not lose your cool and/or disrespect the police officer.

An officer that feels respected is also more likely to show leniency. Some officers have said that people who make polite small talk such as asking how the day is going can be nice. The theory again is that they give polite people more of a break. As a general rule however, I recommend not saying more than what is necessary.

Tip 3 – Do not incriminate yourself.

If you are asked any questions like, “do you know how fast you were going” or “do you know why I stopped you” it is better to simply (and politely) state that you are not sure. Do not say, “I am sorry I was speeding” or anything similar to that.

The key is you do not want to give the police officer more information that he can then use against you if you decide to contest the ticket later in court. If the officer isn’t satisfied with you telling him that you are not sure why you were pulled over, you can also say “I thought I was driving with the normal speed of traffic”.

Resist the urge to ask the police officer any questions about why he pulled YOU over if you feel other cars were moving at the same speed or faster.

Tip 4 – Ask if the officer would consider giving you a warning.

At this point you should already have demonstrated that you are polite and respectful of the police officer. This is a good time to ask to be let off with a warning. Again, be careful about saying that you will stop speeding or anything that can incriminate yourself in the process of trying to get off with a warning.

In many places, warnings actually count towards an officers quota of tickets issued. So if you play your cards right this could be a great option to put an end to everything the same day! If however, the officer refuses to let you off with a warning then Tip 5 will be necessary.

Tip 5 – If you have done all of the above and you still get a ticket DO NOT PAY IT!
